Expert Mould Removal Across Northern Rivers NSW, Byron Bay, Ballina, Lismore & Beyond
In this climate the stain on the wall is rarely the whole problem — and four years after the floods, a lot of mould is still inside cavities that look clean. Tell us what you can see and smell. Your enquiry may be referred to one independent local remediation contractor, who inspects, quotes and contracts with you directly.
Northern Rivers Mould Removal is an independent referral service and does not perform or
contract for the advertised work. Your enquiry may be referred to an independent contractor. Where licensing is required, the contractor's identity and licence details will be provided before you accept a quotation or enter a contract.

Work out what to do first
Flood, leak or humidity: what does this mould actually need?
Three questions, three honest paths. Post-flood answers land differently here than anywhere else in the state, so start with the water, not the stain.
Path one
A safe DIY clean
A small patch (under about one square metre) on a non-porous surface can be cleaned yourself once the moisture source is fixed: NSW Health’s household mould guidance covers doing it safely with gloves, a mask and good ventilation. No contractor needed, and this site says so.
Larger areas, porous materials or any flood-affected home point to professional remediation: finding what drove the moisture, then a written scope from a contractor. Flood inundation especially; contaminated floodwater colonises materials that surface cleaning cannot fix.
When the mould is concealed (a smell, a history, nothing to see) the honest first step is finding out what is actually there: moisture mapping, air sampling, a written report. Test before anyone quotes remediation, so the scope answers evidence rather than guesswork.
All three paths are real outcomes, and sometimes the right answer is the one that earns nobody anything.
Answer the three questions and the matching path is highlighted; without JavaScript, all three read in full above.
Northern Rivers Mould Removal refers remediation enquiries only and does not perform any of this work itself.

The Mould Problem Northern Rivers Homeowners Know Too Well
Northern Rivers NSW is one of Australia’s most beautiful regions, and one of its most demanding when it comes to indoor mould. Subtropical humidity, salt-laden coastal air, the aftermath of the catastrophic 2022 Lismore floods, and a housing stock full of older timber homes create conditions where mould doesn’t just appear, it thrives.
A musty smell in your bathroom. A dark patch creeping across the ceiling. A persistent cough that clears up when you leave the house. If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Mould affects thousands of Northern Rivers homes every year, and in our humid climate, surface cleaning rarely solves the underlying problem.
Northern Rivers Mould Removal is a referral service. We are not a contractor and we do not carry out mould work ourselves. We take your enquiry, and it may be referred to an independent local mould contractor who inspects, quotes and invoices you directly, anywhere from Byron Bay and Lennox Head on the coast, through Ballina and Lismore, all the way inland to Bangalow, Mullumbimby, Murwillumbah, and Casino.

Local conditions
Northern Rivers rain, floods and humidity leave moisture behind.
This service covers the Northern Rivers, from Lismore and Casino through to Ballina, Byron Bay, the Tweed and the Richmond Valley. Here, high rainfall, flood recovery and subtropical humidity keep building cavities damp long after the visible surfaces look dry. Timber, plasterboard, insulation, subfloors and roof spaces can all hold moisture you cannot see, so the water history and the way the property dries matter more than the stain on the wall.

How do I know if I need professional mould removal or if I can do it myself?
If the affected area is less than one square metre, on a non-porous surface (like tiles or glass), and you can identify and fix the moisture source, a DIY approach with appropriate safety measures may be sufficient. If the mould covers more than one square metre, is on porous materials (plasterboard, timber, carpet, insulation), is behind walls or under floors, or if anyone in the home has respiratory conditions, professional remediation is the appropriate response. Read our DIY vs professional guide for a detailed breakdown.
Is the mould in my house making my family sick?
Mould exposure can cause respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, asthma flare-ups, skin and eye irritation, and in vulnerable individuals, children, the elderly, and those with existing respiratory conditions, more serious health effects. If household members are experiencing unexplained health symptoms that improve when they leave the property, mould should be investigated as a possible cause. Read more about mould health symptoms.
How long after the 2022 Lismore floods can mould still be a problem?
Mould from the 2022 floods can still be an active problem today. Many homes that appeared clean on the surface retained mould colonies inside wall cavities, beneath subfloors, and in ceiling voids, spaces that weren't reached during initial clean-ups. If your Lismore home was flooded in 2022 and you're noticing musty smells, discolouration on walls, or worsening respiratory symptoms, concealed mould is a real possibility. Read our detailed guide to post-flood mould.
Can you help with mould in a rental property?
Yes. We take enquiries from both landlords and property managers across Northern Rivers. A professional inspection report can support a landlord's obligation to maintain a habitable premises, and it provides the documentation needed for tenancy-related disputes. Read about landlord mould obligations in NSW.
Do you provide documentation for insurance claims?
A professional mould assessment report is written to meet insurance company requirements and includes photographic evidence, moisture readings, affected area mapping, and a recommended scope of works. Ask the contractor who quotes your job to confirm insurer documentation is included; many can liaise directly with loss adjusters. Read how insurers handle mould claims in NSW.
How quickly can you respond?
Honestly: no response time is promised while the referral network for this region is being established. Every enquiry is reviewed personally by the operator, and it may be referred to an independent local contractor, if and when one is confirmed for your area. If your situation involves active flooding, Category 3 water contamination, or occupants with serious health conditions, say so in the form so your enquiry can be flagged as urgent.
Do you service the whole Northern Rivers region?
We cover Byron Bay, Ballina, Lismore, Lennox Head, Bangalow, Mullumbimby, Murwillumbah, Casino, and the surrounding areas. If you're unsure whether we cover your location, contact us and we'll let you know.
